Gel electophoresis is laboratory technique which is used to seperate mixtures of RNA, DNA and proteins. Gel electophoresis involves an electric field, Since RNA and DNA are negatively charged molecules they migrate towards positive end of the gel and get seperated. But proteins are not negatively charged so they must first mix proteins with a detergent called sodium dodecyl sulfate. This makes the proteins unfold into linear shape and coats with a negative charge, which allows them to migrate towards positive end of the gel and be seperated.
