The substituent which shows Electron Donating resonance (EDG) effect, activates the benzene ring ie. such a substitituent is said to be ortho/para directing. Whereas, The substituent w hich shows Electron Withdrawing resonance (EWG) effect, deactivates the benzene ring i.e. such a substitituent is said to be meta directing CH3 a) -N (CH3)2,-OCH3,-OH are EDG hence they a n ng activating and o/p directing. N: b) c) -CN, -NO2, -COOCH3 are EWG hence they are ring deactivating and meta directing.
