Answer #1

Phagocytosis is the process of a cell engulfing other cells or foreign particles. These cells which engulf particles are commonly named as phagocyte.

Phagocytosis mechanism can either be a defensive mechanism of immune system in humans or a feeding mechanism in amoebas.

In amoebas, the pesudopodia helps in ingesting the food through phagocytosis.

In case of humans, two types of leukocytes-the macrophages and neutrophils take the role of phagocytosis. They are recruited to places where an injury or an inflammation or a pathogen entry has been recognised by the complement system.

The phagocytes engulf the foreign particles only after physically contacting it and enclose it completely with a membrane named phagosome which is further digested by the hydrolytic enzymes and lower pH of lysosomes. The fusion of phagosome and lysosome are called as phagolysosome. the cell surface receptors such as opsonin, scavenger,toll-like are present on them depending on the particle they meet witg.
