5. The basic reaction that occurs when CO2 is aerated into pure water is as follows:-

CO2 + H2O <---> HCO3- + H+ (reversible reaction)

Basically the bicarbonate buffer gets created in such a way. There is carbon dioxide that is dissolved in the form of carbonic acid, which helps in neutralizing the OH- ions thereby decreasing the pH of the blood.

On the other hand the bicarbonate ion interacts with the H+ ion which again gets neutralized thereby increasing the blood pH.

Hence there is no change in pH when this event occurs.
