Ans :

Definition: The variables that take on finite number of values are called discrete variables.

Example 1: If a die is rolled thrice and added, the possible values are - (3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17, 18)

Example 2: If a coin is tossed 3 times, the number of heads can be (0, 1, 2, 3)

Expanding on the example where the students can choose any number of classes among - Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Social, Humanities, Computers.

Here the discrete variable i.e, number of classes taken by the students can take on any integer value between 0 to 8.
