Bano Fakhra Batool has been doing immense research in establishing links between emotional intelligence and leadership.

One strategy that I admire and have been aspiring to follow is Self- Regulation as a Leader. Daniel Goleman in his leadership theory talks about practicing flexibility and commitment to demonstrate progressive personal accountability as a hallmark to achieving success as a leader.

Simply put, self-regulation is about self-control and holding back to reflect and respond to a situation or a specific person. Thus, making appropriate and sound decisions with a clear vision and commitment to values. Reacting whimsically results in deeply compromising one’s vision and values resulting in poor leadership.

Choosing to respond instead of react and reply in situations requires deep reflection and an uncompromising belief in one’s values. When invested in this manner for many years, one will be clear in moral and ethical dilemmas and make clear and correct choices.

Accepting one’s limitations and faults and facing the consequences with zero complaints goes a long way in leadership. Blaming others and holding others accountable is the easier but small minded way of dealing with a situation.

In a stressful situation, relax and reflect instead of reacting and shouting. Practice deep breathing exercises and yoga to stay calm and clear headed at all times. Practice writing negative things to channelize them out of your system. This will help you stay positive and be intuitive in a crisis.
