CHD7 gene encodes a protein known as chromodomain-helicase-DNA-binding protein 7 or ATP-dependent helicase CHD7. The protein is an enzyme and it functions as a chromatin remodeler. The enyzme requires ATP for organization or remodeling of chromatin. Before birth, the protein is found in many parts of the body such as eye, inner ear and brain. Mutations in CHD7 gene would result in a non-functional CHD7 protein and this results in CHARGE syndrome that is associated with coloboma of the eye, central nervous system anomalies, heart defects, atresia of the nasal choanae, retardation of growth and development, genital and/or urinary defects, ear anomalies and deafness.
