Acculturation Views
Acculturation can refer to cultural changes that take place when one culture merges in another culture or comes in contact with the other culture.
However, in psychology, the emphasis is on understanding how individuals change due to contact with other cultures.
In early psychology, acculturation is viewed as subtractive as it was considered that this process has only one outcome that is assimilation.
When contact happens with a new culture, the individuals may learn the language and practices of other cultures, and let go of their bond and attachment with their culture of origin.
However, this view is not sufficient to take a wider view of the perspective of immigrants.
The other view of acculturation is the additive view, where individuals adopt new practices and language of other culture but they also maintain their attachment and connection to their native culture.
The additive approach is more accurate as it may promote biculturalism, these individuals may be better adjusted in the environment. It also promotes diversity. There is the utilization of resources from both the cultures which may promote creativity and productivity.
The subtractive view does not properly explain the overall perspectives and experiences of immigrants. However, the additive approach takes wider view.
