Note: The principle of univariance: is An infinite set of different wavelength-intensity combinations can elicit exactly the same response from a single type of photoreceptor.
Question : what is the implication of univariance for color perception?
Answer:
There are three types of cone (L, M, and S) that differ in their photopigments in humans called Trichromacy. Of the three photopigments, each photopigment is selective for a different range of wavelengths. If two lights evoke the same responses in all the three-cone type photopigments, then the two lights will look the same. All that matters is the excitation in the three cone types. Each cone outputs only a single number (i.e., satisfies univariance). It tells us how many photons it has absorbed, but nothing about which photons they were (i.e., which wavelength or its intensity). For example, the M cones will respond equally to a bright blue light as a bright green light. As far as the M cones are concerned, these lights look the same. There are lots of lights out there which are physically different (different wavelength) but result in the same cone excitations (such lights are called metamers).
