Compare AND contrast the 2 groups of microscopes: light (compound and stereomicroscope) and electron (scanning and transmission). Make sure to include at least 5 similarities and/or differences
Microscope is used to magnification and resolution of microorganism in the laboratory for the study. Magnification is the ability of microscope to make small objects seems larger, like microscope make organism visible by making them look larger whereas resolution is the ability of microscope to distinguish two objects from each other.
Light microscope – A light microscope uses magnifying lenses and visible light to see the small object which is not possible to see through naked eyes.
Electron microscope – Electron microscope uses electron beam instead of visible light and an electron detector at the place of human eyes.
Comparison of light and electron microscope –

Light microscope |
Electron microscope |
|
This uses visible light to illuminate the object |
Uses radiation to illuminate the object |
|
This is smaller in size compared to electron microscope. |
It is larger because of separate system like vacuum and image processing system. |
|
In this the formation of image depends upon the absorption of light by different part of object. |
Formation of image depends upon the spread of electron beam or radiation by part of object. |
|
Low magnification range from 500 to 1500 times. |
High magnification 100000 to 500000 times. |
|
Uses glass lenses |
Uses electromagnetic lenses. |
|
In this specimen is mounted on slide of glass. |
Specimen is mounted in the metallic grid of copper. |
|
For staining color dye like blue food coloring, iodine dye is used for different color. |
For staining metals are uses and image is formed by the deflection of electron rays from this metal. |
|
It has resolving power approx 200nm. |
It has resolving power 0.1 nm |
