Imagine you are a nematode that infects Soay sheep. If you want to maximize the likelihood that you survive and reproduce, should you prefer a more resistant sheep host or more tolerant host? Why?
If I imagine myself to be a nematode that infects Soay sheep, I would prefer to infect a more tolerant host than a resistant sheep to maximize the likelihood that I survive and reproduce.
Tolerance indicates the ability of the host to minimize the damage caused by the nematode burden. It is the rate of decline in the health of host with increasing parasite burden.
Resistance, on the other hand, indicates the ability to ward off infection and recover from it while reducing parasite burden.
For example, if the infection of nematode causes weight loss in Soay sheep, then a less tolerant sheep will lose weight early with increasing parasite burden and a more tolerant will lose weight very slowly compared to the prior. A resistant sheep would avert the infection as soon as possible whereas a tolerant sheep would allow the increase in nematode number and might also reproduce.
Therefore, in favor of nematode a tolerant sheep will be more beneficial to survive and reproduce.

Imagine you are studying Soay sheep on the island of Hirta. How would you compare resistance among sheep? In other words, what would you need to know to rank sheep by their resistance to nematodes?
Do you expect sheep that invest more in resistance to nematodes or tolerance of nematodes to be more likely to survive over the winter? Why?
Imagine that you currently work on the Pepsi brand in the marketing department. You want to learn more about why consumers are loyal to your brand. What type of research would you employ to gain a better understanding of brand loyalty? Please explain why you selected this type of research.
How do you think a physician should deal with parents that want hGH for their kids? Being tall is generally considered an advantage in life, so why not give it to kids even if it is not medically necessary? What if we gave it to all kids, like a vaccine against shortness? Or should we shelf the medicine and work on being more tolerant of short people?
Imagine that you want to start your own business of selling burgers. You are however working on a salary in some other cafeteria. You make a budget and see that you might have to incur the following expenses to run a cafeteria. __1. Imagine at least five variable expenses and five fixed expenses of your choice (can be more). __2. Imagine a Sales Price for your burgers. __3. Also imagine some basic drawings or salary for yourself as you are thinking...
1. Imagine you have a VERY large garden consisting of thousands of red-flowered individuals (re- cessive homozygotes rr) and just a few dozen white-flowered plants of the same species that are isolated from all other flower populations (genotypes either RR or Rr). What do you think will happen to the frequency of the white-flowered plants in your garden from year to year, assuming that the two phenotypes survive and reproduce equally well, that flower color is inherited as a dominant...
Imagine that there is a heavy box sitting on the floor that you want to lift up & carry across the room. A. How do the forces compare: i. The force initially needed to lift the box off the ground ii. The force needed to continue lifting the box (vertically) in order to then carry it across the room? B. Explain why this makes sense to you.
Imagine that you want to compare a new diet for tadpoles that are reared in the laboratory to the traditional laboratory diet of boiled lettuce. You want to decide if the new diet will be associated with an increase in the average weight of the tadpoles. The new diet is a meat-based commercial fish food. In your experiment you keep all other factors, such as tadpole density, temperature, pH, amount of food, etc., constant. The only difference between your control...
Imagine you want to study one of the human crystallins, proteins present in the lens of the eye. To obtain sufficient amount of the protein of interest, you decide to clone the gene that codes for it. Assume you know the sequence of this gene. How would you go about this? In a paragraph of approximately 3 to 5 complete logical sentences, explain the technique that you would use, why, and its basic steps. To answer this question you need...
As a real estate investor, you want to maximize your profit by buying and renting houses. You have exactly 8 alternatives which will be given in a format as below. Write a VBA code that maximize your monthly rent with the following constraints: - You can buy the houses within the given budget (in Cell B6). - You can't buy more than 5 houses. Each house is unique. - You give a cleaning service with a limited capacity, so total...
