Propionate Is converted to propionyl- CoA which enters the TCA cycle. However, when there occurs more generation of it, it has drastic effects on the bacterial growth. It is believed that generation of more propionyl-CoA causes inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase enzyme. This stops the metabolic generation of energy which is needed by the bacteria for their growth. Thus, bacterial growth is reduced.
