Answer: Muscle cells can produce lactic acid to give you energy during difficult physical activities. This usually happens when there is not enough oxygen in the body, so lactic acid fermentation provides a way to get ATP without oxygen. However, lactic acid can build up in the muscles during intense exercise and create cramps. It can lead to painful, sore muscles.

Here are some precautions one can take to reduce the buildup of lactic acid.

  1. Step 1 – Drink more and more water
  2. Step 2 – Work out regularly
  3. Step 3 – Accelerate your workout gradually
  4. Step 4 – Know when to back off
  5. Step 5 – Stretch after intense workout
  6. Step 6 – Use a foam roller to massage the muscles
