The bony structure of our body is called skeleton. The skeletal system, in coordination with the muscular system, allows the flexible movement of the body. An adult human contains 206 bones that serve various functions.

The bones often have surface markings that are characteristic to specific bones, and they serve different functions. Many of the surface markings are not present at the time of birth, but they develop in adults, according to the strain on specific parts of bones.

The functions of skeletal system are,

1. To provide framework to the body structure.

2. Assit in movement of body inassociation with the muscular system.

3. Protect the internal organs of the body.

4. Site of synthesis of bood components (hematopoietic system, bone marrow).

5. Storage site of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus.

Based on the shape of the bones, they are classified into five different types, namely long bones (Eg: femur, humerus), short bones (EG: ankle and wrist bones), flat bones (Eg: bones of sternum), irregular bones (Eg: bones of vertebra) and sesamoid bones (Eg: patella).
