The principle of osmosis can be applied to solve the problems. Simply put, osmosis states that water will move from a position of lower solute concentration, to a position where the solute concentration is higher. The outcome of this movement of water/solvent is to ensure that the concentration of solutes is equal both inside and outside the cell.

Beaker A: The solution is isotonic, water will neither move in or out; the cell will neither swell nor shrink.

Beaker B: The solution is hypotonic, water will move in; the cell will swell.

Beaker C: The solution is hypertonic, water will move out of the cell; the cell will shrink.

3.b

The cell in beaker A is Isotonic to the solution in the beaker.

The cell in beaker B is Hypertonic to the solution in the beaker.

The cell in beaker C is Hypotonic to the solution in the beaker.
