In using an ANOVA test two areas need to be considered—a random-effects model and a fixed-effects model.
In this module’s discussion, identify the difference(s) between the two models and the pros and cons of using each model in calculation.
Fixed Model is used when treatment levels are fixed i.e specifically selected for the experiment. hence conclusions of ANOVA is applicable only to the selected levels not others.In other words findings from ANOVA can't be extended to cover other levels(not part of experiment for which ANVA is done) even if available in practice.
Random Model is used when treatment levels are used are kind of random sample from a large population of treaments. Hence result of ANOVA can be extended to other levels even if they are not explicitly considered as part of ANOVA.
If we look the model equation of Treatment effects Model
y_{ij} = mu (Overall mean) + Tao_{i} (parameter representing effect of treatment) + epsillon_{ij}(random error)
Tao_{i} is fixed for fixed effects model where as for random effects model its a random variable , and we try to estimate the variablity of this parameter.
In studies like Measurement Systems Analysis these error components are estimated and acted if significant.
