Plaques are a structure that is formed on a cell plate or culture when the bacteria culture is grown on agar plates. These are formed in the nutrient plates. The plaque is basically a clear area which is formed due to the cell lysis or due to presence of growth inhibitory agents like bacteriophage in a culture medium. One of the reason why the plaque must have not grown despite the cells being viable is because probably several lytic cycles must have already been carried out and most of the cells present are lysed. When the cells or the total number of cells present in the culture becomes saturated, growth of the cell declines and hence the plaques stops growing.
