Career sequencing means having a final goal in mind in a particular organization or a particular job that a person wants to do and then deciding on the sequential steps that a person should take to reach the final objective of the career of a person. The final objective can be to become a CEO or to become head of Marketing in a certain organization or to work as a Data Scientist in a certain organization. These are some of the examples of final objectives of the career of a typical management graduate. Career sequencing is a strategic plan to achieve these objectives, this can be done by joining an internship, learning basic concepts and then move to a higher organization and work there for a certain period after which join the organization which was included in your final objective. This entire process is called as career sequencing.

There can be multitudes of career sequencing options for any professional. It is also possible that a person may choose not to implement career sequencing and prefer a different path. The choice of career sequencing depends on personal choices or career objective. If a person has a fixed career objective then there are high chances that a person will indulge in career sequencing. If a person does not have a specific objective then she may not have career sequencing and rather focus on just doing her job and staying in the organization for years to come. Hence, the choice of career sequencing or not depends on the career objectives of the individuals.
