Which of the following adenines could you mutate to create a silent transversion mutation?

5'-ATG GGA TGG CAC CTG-3'

Answer: A to G or C to T -I don't really understand why this is the answer. I get that the adenine you will use is the one in the GGA, since it is the third codon it will cause a silent mutation. But why does the answer key say A to G or C to T? Shouldn't it say A to C or T, considering it's a transversion.

A silent mutation is a type of point mutation where the mutation in one nucleotide doesn;y change the amino acid.

A transversion is a mutation in which purine is mutated into pyrimidine and vise verse.

The following could be transversion mutation

AUG to UUG or CUG

AUG encodes for methionine, UUG encodes for leucine, CUG encodes for Leucine. So transversion of A in the codon AUG is not a silent mutation

GGA to GGC or GGU - GGA encodes for Glycine, GGC and GGU also encodes for Glycine.

So transversion of A is a silent mutation.

CAC to CUC or CCC

CAC encodes for Histidine, CUC encodes for leucine, CCC encodes for proline. So transversion of A in the codon CAC is not a silent mutation.

Hence answer is GGA.
