Max Weber was a German sociologist, philosopher, jurist, and political economist.
He is one of the most important theorists on the development of modern Western society. His ideas profoundly influenced social theory and social research. Weber is often cited, with Émile Durkheim and Karl Marx, as among the three founders of sociology.
He was a key proponent of methodological anti-positivism, arguing for the study of social action through interpretive (rather than purely empiricist) means, based on understanding the purpose and meaning that individuals attach to their own actions.
Following are the main criticisms of Max Weber's Social Action Theory-
( I ) C Wright Mills was of the view that although Weber implied that he had great concern with mental process, he actually spent little time on analyzing them.
( ii ) He laid greater stress on individuals meanings and ignored the influence of social structure in understanding the reality.
( iii ) His claim of objectivity is also not true. His methods of Verstehen and Ideal Types are highly susceptible to subjectivity of the investigator.
( iv ) His idea of social action has focus on individual and collective action is ignored.
