Which of the following situations will give the highest level of lac operon transcription in E. coli?

**this was my question from my professor there WAS NO additional information given to me. I assume the answer is no glucose and positive for lactose. I think the answer is B; i just wanted to check.

A. no glucose no lactose

B. no glucose plus lactose

C. glucose no lactose

D.All conditions will result in the same level of transciption

Please explain the correct answer too

The correct answer is definitely B. No glucose plus lactose.

Lac operon genes code for proteins involved in lactose metabolism in bacteria. However, the transcription of genes is turned ON only when lactose is present in the media and is kept OFF when there is no lactose in medium.

case A: No glucose, no lactose : If there is no lactose, bacteria will not synthesize proteins for lactose metabolism.Hence no transcription of lac operon genes.

case B: No glucose, plus lactose: cells will rapidly utilize the lactose as carbon source for growth. Hence, transcription of lac operon genes will be high.

case C: glucose, no lactose: Since lactose is not present, cells will use glucose as carbon source. lac operon genes shall not be transcribed.

case D: all conditions will have different level of transcription.

So, correct answer is B.
