Descartes stated that he himself is in a Whirlpool of beliefs that are false and the only thing that he is certain of is himself and his existence. He states that although the fact that God exists is in doubt, he states how an evil cunning demon is present , striving to develop false beliefs which can decieve us. He states how he is certain of himself even when he is dreaming as the doubt that he has is merely hyperbolic. He explains how in order to be deceived by the evil demon, he must exist. He also says "I think, therefore I am."
