Do Unskilled Immigrants Hurt the American Economy?
immigrants can have a huge impact on the economy. they possess different skills for a different environment and have a differnt lifestyle and culture . but in today's world of globalization and trade, people tend to migrate for better opportunities carrying favourable skills. hence they have a positive impact and negative impact both.
immigrants can be skilled an unskilled. skilled immigrants can increase productivity, output in an economy. it can increase employment by engaging in starting businesses and startups or productive and efficient workers. they are highly qualified and a country can benefit from skilled immigrants as they contribute to technology, research, new ideas increasing employment, trade and output and productivity which is very beneficial for an economy.
if immigrants are highly productive, per capita GDP would increase. however, if immigrants don't work or don't increase productivity, then there are losses to GDP. High skilled immigrants can benefit the economy by advancement in technology, innovation and research because they carry a high level of skill set which is useful for any economy to grow. however, the increase in unskilled labour can affect the population in a very adverse manner.,increasing population and no addition in skill set.
however, unskilled labour cannot directly contribute to an economy but can be an efficient source of increasing economic growth indirectly.they can act as cheap labour in the country by working at low wages (minimum wages). more physical task and manual work are done by them which make them specialized in that particular activity which increases the total productivity of factor.
an increased unskilled immigrant is equal to increased labour supply which reduces the cost of production of output. moreover, they adopt the technology and also take up a task at utmost readiness whereas a skilled immigrant can only work for the task he has a specific skill for.
For an economy like America, a developed nation, unskilled immigrants can have a positive impact more than the negative impact as unskilled immigrants come there for better opportunities can work in the minimum wage which reduces there the cost of production. the amount of research, technology advancements will increase as now output can be produced at a very fast rate also they spread of these advancements by unskilled immigrants can be huge . in all the impact is positive but one cannot forget the pressure these immigrants cause on the country land by increasing population and unemployments ( because initially obs are difficult to find and seasonal employment ) and the GDP of a country. therefore, unskilled labour can hurt an American economy. but the positive impact of unskilled immigrants can almost nullify the negative impact.
