Best way to define the Six Sigma steps represented by the acronym DMAIC:

In Statistics, σ refers to variability in any process.

6 Sigma (6σ) means having 3.4 errors or defects per million opportunities (DPMO) (99.99966% accuracy) which is virtually error-free business performance.

Six σ Performance Improvement can be achieved by following the DMAIC Model:

D (Define): Define the improvement activity & improvement goals.

M (Measure): Existing systems needs to be measured, metrics has to be defined and identify performance metrics.

A (Analyze): Systems needs to be analyzed and development of causal hypotheses is to be done.

I (Improve): Ideas needs to be developed, Solutions are to be tested and new process, structure & systems are to be implemented.

C (Control): Standard procedures is to be established making sure that the new solution, structure, process stays in control.
