A case-control study examining the influence of sexual behaviour on Hepatitis B was conducted in a hospital between 2005 and 2008. The study recruited 229 Cases with Hepatitis B and 229 age- and sex-matched Controls. Both the Cases and Controls completed a questionnaire that inquired about the number of sexual partners they had in the past 2 years. Their responses were used to create the following exposure groups: 0 sexual partners (N=87), 1 sexual partner (N=257), and 2 or more sexual partners (N=114). Of the 229 Cases, 15 were in the 0 sexual partners group, 134 were in the 1 sexual partner group, and 80 were in the 2 or more sexual partners group.
Match the following questions to the appropriate answer:
a. 70%
b. 50%
c. 11.3
d. 5.23
| partner | case | control | total |
| 0 | 15 | 72 | 87 |
| 1 | 134 | 123 | 257 |
| 2 | 80 | 34 | 114 |
| total | 229 | 229 | 458 |
the prevalence of Hepatitis B in the 458 study participants was =(229/458)*100 =50%
The prevalence of Hepatitis B in those with 2 or more partners was =(80/114)*100 =70 %
The odds ratio for Hepatitis B in the group with 1 sexual partner by comparison to the group with 0 sexual partners was =(134/123)/(15/72)=5.23
The odds ratio for Hepatitis B in the group with 2 or more sexual partners by comparison to the group with 0 sexual partners was =(80/34)/(15/72)=11.3

A case-control study was designed to see if body piercing by unlicensed merchants was associated with an increased risk of hepatitis B compared to those receiving piercing from licensed merchants. Cases with clinically diagnosed hepatitis B were pair matched to controls without hepatitis B by age, sex, and number of previous body piercings. The results of the study appear in the table below. Based on the information, calculate the matched odds ratio, Controls Exposed Unexposed Cases 96 23 Exposed 87...
In a case control study published in 2013 risk factors for stroke in a population in rural Tanzania were assessed. Of particular interest was HIV status. A total of 200 stroke cases from 2 districts were identified at hospitals and 398 controls, randomly selected from the background census population, frequency matched for age (+/- 3 years) and sex. A total of 26 cases were HIV positive compared to 16 controls. Q1 Complete the “2 by 2” table (including headers) below...
Question 28 0 out of 2 po n a case-control study of osteoporosis, 150 women were enrolled as cases and an equal number as controls. Among the cases 50 reported low calcium intake, while only 20 of the controls reported low calcium intake. Calculate the odds ratio in the association between low calcium intake and developing osteoporosis in this population.
A case control-study was conducted looking at maternal exposure to amantadine, a suspected teratogen, and birth defects. The below 2 by 2 shows the data of the study Positive amantadine exposure No amantadine exposure Cases 15 350 Controls 7 950 Calculate the crude Odds Ratio. Does it appear that amantadine is associated with an increased risk of having a child with a birth defect? How would you interpret your Odds Ratio?
To study the causes of an outbreak of aflatoxin poisoning in Africa, investigators conducted a case-control study with 40 case-patients and 80 controls. Among the 40 poisoning victims, 32 reported storing their maize inside rather than outside. Among the 80 controls, 20 stored their maize inside. a. Set up a 2 x 2 table and calculate the odds ratio for the association between inside storage of maize and illness. b. Interpret the odds ratio.
