In a case control study published in 2013 risk factors for stroke in a population in rural Tanzania were assessed. Of particular interest was HIV status. A total of 200 stroke cases from 2 districts were identified at hospitals and 398 controls, randomly selected from the background census population, frequency matched for age (+/- 3 years) and sex. A total of 26 cases were HIV positive compared to 16 controls.
