Both the employees and employer both, are benefited from the anti-discriminatory laws. In terms of employees, they can raise voice against any discrimination. While for the employers, they can protect themselves in cases of discrimination by showing their adherence to the laws. By proving certain instance of work necessity the company can protect themselves from cases where they are sued for discrimination in instance of reasonable accommodation, transfer, or promotion.

Federal laws has impacted the workplace decorum till a great extent. Both the employer and employee avoid to engage themselves into any anti discriminatory practices as it could lend them into trouble.

The following are four laws enacted by congress to prohibit anti discriminatory practices in the workplaces:

  1. The title VII of the civil rights act of 1964 was enacted in this regard. It prohibits the discrimination of employees based on their race, sex, colour, origin, religion, age, gender, disability etc.
  2. Bona fide occupational qualifications: it states that employee having the required qualifications cannot be denied of job by the employer.
  3. Civil service reform act 1978: Prohibits any discrimination based on performance if that does not affect the performance of job.
  4. Black lung benefit acts 1973: protects mine workers from discrimination in case they have black lung disease.
  5. American with disabilities act 1990: Protect disabled persons from disparate treatment in the workplace and also in case if they get rejected from any work opportunities instead of having all the required qualifications.
