  1. 1a. The estimated mutation rate of CF is 6.7 x 10-7. What does this suggest about the likelihood of CF being maintained by mutation-selection balance?

  2. 1b. Lyczak et al. (2002) found a positive correlation between the frequency of CF carriers and the incidence of typhoid fever across 11 European countries. Explain why CF may occur at higher frequency than expected by mutation-selection balance.

Answer #1

1a. The likelihood of CF risk is lower at 6.7×10-7, because the mutation selection rate is very frequent, that would be at 0.02 which would be at 4×10-4.

1b.CF occurs at a higher frequency due to the deficiency of arylsulphatase B,due to which CF occurs at a higher rate.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by recessive loss-of-function mutations for a cell surface protein expressed in the mucus membranes of intestines and lungs. Until recently, few affected individuals survived to reproductive age. In Caucasian populations, CF affects 1 infant in 2,500 births. What is the frequency of CF homozygotes? Based on the genotype frequency, what is the frequency of the CF allele? Given a selection coefficient of 1, what would be the mutation rate needed to keep CF in the...

need help with this .. From the pages 571-587 attached below. 1a) Suppose a population of guppies was infected with a parasite. In that population a mutation results in a parasite resistant genotype that spreads through the population through natural selection. A subsequent mutation in the parasite results in a genotype that is unaffected by the newly evolved resistant guppy genotype. What is the name of the hypothesis that explains this host parasite “arms race”.? 1b) What is this name...
