A certain tray has total mass (tray + added weights) or 0.500 kg. It is attached to a string which is run over a pulley and then attached to a hanger and weights. When the hanger and weights have a total mass of 50 grams or more, they descend (fall downwards), otherwise they remain stationary. What is the coefficient of static friction for the tray?

Answer #1

at 50 gm , there is no movement

so T = mg = 0.05*9.8 = 0.49 N

T = uMg

0.49 = u*0.5*9.8

u = 0.1

so the coefficient of friction is 0.1

    Investigation 1 - Connected Particles (Maximum Mark 45) A block mass M kg is resting on the horizontal top of a cube. The coefficient of friction between the block and the cube is u. Block B, with mass 5.00 kg, rests on block A, with mass 8.00kg. There is no friction between the table and block A, but the coefficient of static friction between block A and B is 0.750. A "massless" string attached to block A passes over a frictionless pulley and block C is suspended from the other end of the string. If we want ALL the blocks moving together with the same acceleration, the largest possible mass that block C can...

    In the system shown below, there is a block of mass M = 3.6 kg resting on a horizontal ledge. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ledge and the block is 0.25. The block is attached to a string that passes over a pulley, and the other end of the string is attached to a hanging block of mass m = 2.2 kg. As shown above, mass m = 4.8 kg slides on a frictionless incline and is attached by a string to another mass 2m which hangs over a pulley. The incline makes an angle \theta θ = 59.4 degrees with the horizontal. The string connecting the masses as well as the pulley have negligible mass and friction. What is the tension (in Newtons) in the connecting string?

A horizontal string is attached to A and passes over a massless, frictionless pulley, and block B with mass 2 kg hangs from it. Because of the pull of gravity, the masses accelerate. What is the Tension in the string (in Newtons)?
