what are the variables? Is there any hypothesis or qualitative assumption leading the study? How was it formulated?
This study compared divorced children with non-divorced children and found that divorced children scored much lower on academic achievement, self-concept, social relations and psychological adjustment. It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of the marriages today will end up in divorce today. This percentage could be higher in western countries like the United States with expanded democracies and freedom. Moreover, the percentage is higher with the subsequent marriages after the first divorce. This paper enumerates the issue of inter-parental conflicts leading to divorce and the consequences it inflicts child development. Divorce has adverse effects in the life of a child with observations showing decreased performance in education, social and economic activities. The introduction part of this report gives an overview of divorce, causes and the needed background.
The section detailing the methodology contains information about the subjects in the study, methods used, and the materials needed for the study. Divorce has been found to impact negatively on a child’s development and parents have a responsibility to ensure that their inter-parental conflicts have minimal or no effects on their children.
There are two types of Variables: Independent and Dependent. An Independent variable is the one which changed or which is manipulated by the researcher to study its impact. The dependent variable is the one which is observed and measured qualitatively or quantitatively to develop theories or prove a hypothesis.
In the given Case Study, the marital status of parents, that is, divorced or non-divorced is the independent variable because its impact is studied on the child. The dependent variable in this scenario will be the various dimensions of Child's development- academic achievement, self-concept, social relations and psychological adjustment.
The hypothesis in this study is that the presence of interparental conflict will negatively impact the development of Child. The hypothesis was formulated by finding out the leading causes of interparental conflicts and understanding its impact on the development of Child. It was assumed that the presence of conflicts between parents will create a lot of stress in the mind of the child and he/she will not get appropriate and necessary attention and care from both parents that are needed in the development. Thus, there will be a negative impact on the various dimensions of personality.
