Can too much somatostatin produced lead to gastrin deficiency? Why and how
Somatostatin is an inhibitory hormone having effects on digestive system and brain. In brain, it inhibits the secretion of growth hormone and thyroid stimulating hormone.
In the digestive system, somatostatin inhibits the secretion of gastrin and secretin which help in digestion of food. In pancreas, it inhibits the secretion of insulin and glucagon. In a normal scenario, the production of somatostatin is through feedback control.
In some cases, a rare endocrine tumour called ‘somatostatinoma’ leads to increased secretion of somatostatin. This results in inhibition of vital hormones and may lead to higher blood glucose concentrations, gall stone formation, indigestion, abdominal cramps, and long lasting diarrhea. The inhibition of gastrin leads to less gastric acid secretion and gastric motility is affected.
