To clean a rug, you can hang it from a clothesline and beat it with a tennis racket. Use Newton's laws to explain why beating the rug should have a cleansing effect.

When we beat the rug with tennis racket the rug moves suddenly away from its vertical position.

The rug moves as it gets impulse from the racket i.e., it is acted upon by a force and moves.

Where as the dust not acted upon by any direct force have the tendency of staying there. In that process it gets detached from the rug and due to gravity comes down are washed away.

Here the tendency of dust on the rug to stay in its original position in the absence of any force is called inertia.

That's what is stated by Newton's 1st law of motion. "Every body continues to be at rest or uniform motion along a straight line unless acted upon by an external force".
