Maslow’s theory: Maslow theory is a motivational theory of psychology which consists of 5-tier model of human needs based on hierarchical needs. Based on the hierarchy, physiological needs like water, food, warmth etc. are of utmost priority followed by safety needs like security, belonging needs like friendship, love etc., self esteem needs like prestige and finally ends up with self-actualization where achieving full potential.
It has increased the understanding of personal and organizational needs and satisfaction because it explains that people will look for physical and physiological needs and once, they are fulfilled they look for safety and relationship. Once, all the goals are reached people will look for self-esteem and self-actualization which states that it is a pyramid like relationship starting from basic needs and ending up with actualization.
The major criticisms of the theory are:
Pyramid is defined as top to bottom approach where physiological needs comes at bottom of hierarchy followed by security and relationships. Self-esteem and self-actualization take least priority and takes top of pyramid.
I feel motivations will not be dictated by my needs as they seem different for me at different times and places.
