Can a tall organization with lots of levels also have wide spans of control? What determines width of span of control? Is there a limit to how wide span of control should be? Why?

No, since a tall organization has many levels of hierarchy, the span of control is narrow in such an organization. The employees' number is small and there are lmore employees groups in a tall organization which divides the control among many groups and narrows the span of control.

The width of the span of control is determined by the number of subordinates who work under a single superior. In a tall organization, there are fewer number of subordinates under each superior and more superiors in the overall structure which narrows down the span of control while a flatter organization will have more employees under one superior which widens the span of control in such an organization.

There is no limit to the width of the span of control but most experts believe that 5-6 subordinates under one superior provide optimum results in terms of productivity and efficacy in performance.
