Why is Rome, and/or the idea of Rome important to understanding the Middle Ages?

The western Roman empire gave way to middle ages.The early medieval period is termed as the Drak ages because of the decline of the Greco Roman culture.Germanic people from the north expanded into Roman territiories .Theu could advance because there was political problems ,civil war, economic and social problems in Rome.Many Barbarians such as Vandals, Lombards , Franks etc took advantage of the condition in Rome andadvanced Roman culture . Roman law,government etc were taken over by crude Barbarians who could not carry on  with Roman art,literature,engineering etc.However the Barbarians also had their own culture and thus gave diversity to the Roman culture.Germanic belief in the rights of the individual mostly influenced Rome and rather than the state , individual right  became more important in Rome.Romans started believing in government by the people,and law courts emerged.The rich culture of Rome and Greece as well as the new ideas of the Germanic people created Christanity which made Europe.Thus Germanic warriors had a lot of exposure to the civilization of Rome and in course of time , the Roman administration was totally set aside by the Germanic administration system.Slowly the Roman army became barbarian and Barbarian soldiers occupied many high positions in the army.Barbarians occupied Europe. Christanity united the different sects and was thus instrumental in the solidification of Europe.The Romans were resposible to give the christian culture to the western world.Later Rome was taken over by the Ostrogoths and western half of Rome came to an end.The Byzantine empire continued in the eastern half with Constantinopole as capital. There were increased conflicts within the papacy in Rome later.Thus Rome is very important in understanding middle ages..
