Okay so I have a question from a lab I did, so I'll quickly outline our lab.

We mixed E coli. and Salmonella with antiserum and observed for cloudiness/agglutination. We then mixed the same antiserum with an unknown bacteria to determine whether it was E coli. or Salmonella. We are asked "how definitive are the results?" and I'm not really sure. Are they less definitive because we observed the agglutination using only our eyes?

Answer #1

When you would have mixed either of the two bacterial population with anti serum you would have observed a clear cut result either there would be cloudiness or there wont be. Similarly when you would have mixed the unknown population of bacteria to see if the bacteria was e.coli or salmonella and were asked how definitive results were it meant how surely can you tell if it was the same as e.coli or salmonella. If the cloudiness or appearance was not like either then the unknown population is mixed or contains a different bacteria altogether.

Organic Chemistry Lab question In the experiment we did acid-base extractions to find impurities. The impurity was either benzoic acid (acid) or 4-chloroaniline (base) So in this experiment we did Acid-Base extraction with an unknown compound. So we had an unknown of 0.150 grams and mixed it with 20 mL of diethyl ether. We placed this in a separatory funnel and added 2mL of 1.0 NaOH solution to the separatory funnel and placed the stopper over the top of the...

CONTEXT So we did an Sn1 reaction in chem lab to convert t-butyl alcohol to t-butyl chloride by the following reaction C4H10O + HCl --> C4H9Cl + H2O We did this by mixing the HCl and the t-butyl alcohol in a separatory funnel, then we collected the organic layer that formed and vacuum distilled the product. QUESTIONS What is something that could cause a low yield in this experiment? we got a 26% yield, I was thinking maybe heating up...

So I'm a little bit confused by this force table lab I did recently, where the professor wants there to be a scaled drawing of all of the vectors involved. In the experiment we used three different vectors: A, B, and C. After Coming up with the sub-components for each of those, we were then required to get the resultant vector as well as the anti-resultant. I really would appreciate some graphical breakdown of this.. Because I'm a little lost...

So I have a question regarding my first advanced physics Lab. I missed the first day so I need quite a bit of guidance. We had to measure the density of materials, in this case a cylindrical rod, and we were given a cylindrical rod, string, balance and meter stick. Note that one side of our rod was cut and one side was round (shown in the pic below). Below is the calculations we did and the results we got...

thats why i was so confused on this one, because our teacher did not give us any surrounding context regarding experimental biotechnology 1) You are given 2 strains of E. coli, X & Y. Strain X carries a kanamycin (kan) resistance gene on a plasmid and strain Y carries a tetracyline (tetR) resistance gene on a plasmid. The 2 strains are mixed together, plated on media containing kanamycin and tetracyline and incubated. The next day you notice that there is...
