Ans. 1 Immortalized cells are the group of cells of multicellular organism which due to mutation, can escape normal cellular senescence and keep division continuous. Thus they have ability to grow in vitro for a prolonged period of time. However mutations required for immortality can be natural or be intentionally induced for experimental purpose.
The cells are manipulated to circumvent the process of senescence and become immortal by Introducing a Viral Gene method. This can override the Cell Cycle and thus can be used to overcome senescence by hindering function of the biological brakes on proliferative control.

Ans. 2 Major differences between normal cells and cancerous cells is visible from the chromosomes morphology (karyotype). In oppose to cancerous cells (tumorogenic) an immortalised cell line would normally not proliferate indefinitely but, due to mutation, it evades normal cellular senescence and divides. The cells can therefore be grown for prolonged periods in vitro.
