1.defects like dislocations are detrimental because they reduce the strength of the material by propagation of cracks upon application of load.dislocations are the reason in reduction of theoretical strength of material.in corrosion terminology they act as anodic sites leafs to formation of galvanic cell which deteriorates the metal with time.

2.porosity is a defect which is present in filters and catalytic converters to remove unwanted impurities.

Adding additional solute atoms to solvent increase the strength of material example dura-aluminium which is widely used in aircragt industry etc...
