When preparing the molecule luminol why do you need to heat the mixture of hydrazine and 3-nitrophthalic acid? Write the equation.

These are the procedures for the lab:

Method

Part 1 in hood

  1. Weigh 0.15g 3-nitrophthalic acid and place in -0.2 mL 10% hydrazine
  1. Insert Al block
  1. Gently heat to dissolve- hot plate @ 125 C
  1. Add 10 drops ethylene glycol
  1. Add boiling stone
  1. Turn hotplate to 450 C- heat to 210-220 C for 3 min and use temperature probe
  1. Cool to <100 C
  1. Add 2.0 mL hot water
  1. Collect by vacuum filtration

Part 2- At bench

  1. Crude product to 13 x 100 test tube
  1. Add 0.65 mL 10% NaOH
  1. Dissolve crude product
  1. Add 0.40 g Sodium hydrosulfite
  1. Wash solid down walls with minimal H2O
  1. Clamp test tube
  1. Heat to boil

-hot plate to 200 C

-boil for 5 minute

  1. Add 0.26 mL Glacial Acetictcal
  1. Cool

  1. Collect by vacuum filtration

Part 3

Beaker #1

  1. Place filter paper+luminol in beaker
  1. Add 0 mL 10% Na OH
  1. Add 10.0 mL DI H20
  1. Then add additional 18 mL DI H2O

Beaker #2

  1. 2.0 mL 3% potassium ferricyanide
  1. Add 0 mL 3% H2O2
  1. Add 15.0 mL DI H2O
  1. Bring 2 beakers to weigh room, professor will mix
