Resident Microbiota includes microorganisms like Staphylococcus epidermidis and are considered to be a bit more permanent on the skin surface than transient microbiota. Resident microbiota are not easily removed by hand washing and general hygienic practices as these microbiota have certain properties which act as their defense.

Transient microbiota on the other hand are more temporary/seasonal and are more likely to cause infections. An example is Norovirus and these transient microbiota are generally removed with routine hygienic practices like rinsing hands with water and using a handwash for almost 15 to 30 seconds which is enough to kill 99% of these microorganisms.
