We can see that as the concentration of nitrate in soil increases, yield of mushroom decreases. This is our observation.

Based on this observation, we can place a hypothesis that, yield of mushroom is inversely related to concentration of nitrate in soil.

Now, we can test the hypothesis by growing mushrooms in different soil sample collected from different areas. We can measure the concentration of nitrate in soil and then grow mushrooms on it. We can than count the number of mushrooms to determine the yield.
