A paraphyletic group is the one which includes an ancestor but not all of its descendants. Members of Protista former paraphyletic group in the sense that fungus, plants and animals also share this lineage. The ancestor which has given rise to protester does also given rise to some fungus, plants and animals. This is the reason that members of protista show similarities with fungus, plants and animals as well.

Protista are claimed by both botanist and zoologist for their classification.

Some of the members of Protista have cell wall like that of fungus and plants but the compositions different. Some members do not have cell wall like that of animals.

Some members show autotrophic nutrition like plants but some members show heterotrophic nutrition like fungus and animals.
