Answer #1

Timeout in fact is the reinforcing environment as well as removal from that environment for a certain period of time, the positive reinforcing environment is developed through warm, loving and caring environment the child behavior is immediately followed the way environment was presented to him a parental positive attitude would increase the use of positive behavior. Timeout is used to decrease the inappropriate response and frequency of the response that is done by the removal of positive reinforcer for a certain period of time. Time out is not used to ignore the child's need like hunger fear, thirst or distress.

Time out is usually implemented when there is a presence of inappropriate behavior, 2. The child's safety is more essential that is associated with the child's behavior or 3.When the effect of reinforcer is ineffective, the need of time out is to provide a consistent form of discipline in a calm and controlled manner.

It is used to set a limit when the child displays a defiant behavior and does not respond to the usual method of parenting, it is used to teach the child to control the anger.

The myth is that time-out is counterproductive as the child requires a positive environment to improve his behavior, emotional support, reasoning, may help the child to control the anger, but the research done on it for a decade showed that the behavior increase when there is warmth, love affection together with some restrictions thus to improve the behavior balance of both responsiveness and consistent control is required, as the research has shown that children who receive only positive reinforcement are insufficient to find a significant improvement in child's behavior, it does not eliminate large problematic behaviors.

The timeout is implemented to improve the child behavior initially it is only the command if the child does not comply then he remains timeout for 1 to 2 minutes depending upon his age and if the change of behavior is displayed for 30 seconds then the child is allowed to move.

The people are moving away from endorsing the timeout as they are in the opinion that 1. It traumatizes the child and it can trigger trauma reaction due to harsh disciplinary action when it is possible to teach the child through love, affection, and care. 2. The child may get physically /verbally abused in the context of the coercive cycle, there is the possibility of intensive verbal strategies to control the child, 3. The child who was already abused can get more traumatized due to timeout practice causing a child to experience intense fear and dissociative symptoms.4. A child can develop intense feelings of rejection by the parents/caregivers.

Timeout trend is getting rejected by those who feel that timeout causes more harm than good, because the child is already traumatized, and have fear of rejection, he possibly would have faced abuse, and if he timeout is used it can traumatize the child further.

It is a fact that a child requires both love and punishment to have a balanced behavior but the punishment has to be mild, and it should not disturb the child emotionally and physically, they can be nurtured by love more than by punishment.
