Paid Media
You’re already familiar with paid media; you know it as advertising. But before you figure out where you plan to advertise, you need to know who you are targeting.
Paid media is about reaching the right people in the right way, and doing so at scale. It can be expensive and measuring it depends on what space you’re using (Facebook, for example, provide excellent metrics), but it allows you to reach a lot of people very quickly.
Earned Media
Earned media is all about digital word-of-mouth. You might know this as public relations or media relations. Earned media is the recognition you receive from third parties.
Articles that explain, advertise or review your product or service, and the reviews of the services you provide, are examples of earned media.
Owned Media
Owned media is probably the most valuable type of media for a modern digital media strategy. It’s the content you create for your website, blog, and social media publishing. The main objective of owned media is to serve power and benefit to head forward into customers.
The most important thing to remember about owned media is that it is about providing value to your audience. It’s about sharing your values, insights, and opinions in order to help your leads determine if you’re the right business for them.
Uber is a good example. Their brand is one of the most visible names in the car-sharing market today. Like many brands on YouTube and other social networks, Uber is one of many voices in the conversation. Uber's YouTube channel has a multitude of the entire views about Uber, but the majority of their views are from the videos which are produced by the YouTube community and quite a few of them are by paid promotion.
