The four types of analytical modelling activities that are involved in using a decision support system are:

- what-if analysis- the impact of changes in variables on other variables is analysed

- sensitivity analysis- making repeated changes in a single variable and analysing its impact on other variables

- goal-seeking analysis- selecting variables and making changes in them until one of them reaches the goal

- optimization analysis- for certain constraints an optimum value is taken for selected variables.

What-if analysis is applied by making certain changes in variables to see the effect they make on the other variables related to them directly or indirectly. The decision can be made based on the analysis made through these effects. In other words changes in inputs are made to determine the effect on outputs. For example, making different budgets with a different allocation of funds on each head in them and analysing the impact of these changes on the outcome. A budget can have more fixed for advertising and other can have more for packaging. The sales in both scenarios can be observed and the importance of which one is more can be analysed.
