Ocean Shipments: Ocean shipment refers to the transportation of goods that are in large quantities via sea/ocean. In this type of shipment, the quantities of the product would be high. The cost of ocean shipment would be low as compared to air shipment. Usually, it takes a longer time to reach goods from port A to port B.

Air Shipments: Air shipment refers to parcel delivery via the mode of air by using commercial or charter flights. In this type of shipment, the product quantity would be less and the air shipment cost will be high as compared to ocean shipment. Air shipment provides fast delivery of goods from one place to another.

As we can see that both types of shipments have their own advantages and disadvantages when compared with each other. There are some risks associated with each type of shipment which we will discuss in the below points,

a. Ocean Shipments:

• Slower Transportation: Ocean shipments are slower in delivering the goods from one country to another country as compared to the air shipments. Ocean shipments take a minimum of 15 days to one month or more for delivering the goods.
• Weather risks: As ocean shipments take longer time to reach from one port to another port, the ships usually will be on seawater most of the time, there would be risks of bad weather, cyclones, and other storms with the ocean shipment which could be a reason for accidents or loss of goods in the sea.
• Geographical issues: There is a history of ship accidents due to geographical issues in the ocean such as icebergs, coral reefs, sandbars, etc. These type of geographical differences in the ocean is difficult to navigate and could harm the ships.
• Lack of infrastructure: There would be infrastructural issues for ocean shipment. Some parts in the world are not accessible for ocean shipment due to the non-development of the ports and not able to receive big ship containers. It needs huge investments to develop ocean ports to receive the ships carrying large containers.

a. Air Shipments:

• Weather issues: Weather changes is the main issue with air shipment also like ocean shipment. It does not happen usually, but it could be an issue when it comes to delivering at the exact time.
• consignment weight limitation: Unline ocean shipment, the air shipment will have the issues of size and weight of the container. So we can send only low weight consignment via air shipment. And because air shipment is costly, it is not advisable to send multiple consignments on different flights.
• Operational issues: Not all airports are connected for air shipment in all over the world, so there will be the issues for importer or exporter to select air shipment if both airports of importer or exporter place should be connected for air shipment. That means all airports in the world are not accessible for air shipments.
