How can culturing microbes in media in a lab, bias our perception of the abundance and diversity of microbes in the natural environment?
Answer:
In the natural environment, there are two types of
microorganisms found, viz, Culturable microorganisms and
Non-culturable microorganisms. The non-culturable microbes
are alive cells but have some special adaptive properties which
make them nearly impossible to grow in the culture media. Some
microbes need unique environmental conditions and nutrient
supplements which cannot be imitated in the laboratories. In the
laboratory, we can only grow the microorganisms whose cultivating
conditions can be imitated.
The inability to grow the non-culturable microbes limits our
knowledge towards them. In most cases, we even do not know the
existence of such microorganisms. This affects our view regarding
the verse diversity of microorganisms present in nature.

Discuss how we can put microbes to work to facilitate our lives: from keeping our landscape clean to making delicious food and beverages. Objectives: Recognize the importance of microorganisms in water and sewage treatment plans. Describe food Microbiology, focusing on both preventative infection methods and the implication of specific microbial taxa in food preparation. Describe the employment of microorganisms in industrial Microbiology. Create a 5-7 page essay summarizing various ways in which we employ microbes to our advantage. Think about...
In class we discussed many metrics of species abundance, richness, and diversity. How are the various metrics of species richness and diversity important or useful for understanding ways that humans can save populations, communities, and ecosystems? Describe your answer fully using examples of research that we discussed in class (e.g., abundance, relative abundance, richness, diversity, and biodiversity).

Ecology Chapter 14 Predation and Herbivory
Concept Checks
CONCEPT CHECK 1. What evidence is there that predators can control the abundance of prey? 2. How has the reduction of top predators had unintended consequences on the abundance of prey? 3. What evidence is there that herbivores can control the abundance of plants? CONCEPT CHECK 1. How does a prey population's ability to disperse allow the prey to persist in the presence of predators? 2. Based on the predator-prey population equations,...
