Part I:

What is true of you and refrigerators?

  1. Nothing; it’s a ridiculous comparison
  2. Both violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics
  3. Both result in cooling internally
  4. You are both high entropy systems and maintain that state by importing entropy from the environment
  5. You both maintain low entropy states by using an energy input: you need to eat and the refrigerator needs to be plugged in

Part II:

A cup of coffee sits on a counter in a room. Both are at the same temperature. Could you possibly see the coffee cool off and the room heat up?

  1. There is no chance of this even if you had infinite time
  2. It’s technically possible but so unlikely that you’ll very likely never see it happen even if you watch a trillion years
  3. It’s unlikely but possible. You have a small chance of seeing this if you watch a long time
  4. You are likely to be able to see this if you watch for as short a time as a day
