Net Ionic Equation : The net ionic equation is a chemical equation for a reaction that lists only those species that  participating in the reaction

Step to write ionic equation equation:

  1. Start with a balanced molecular equation.
  2. Break all soluble strong electrolytes (compounds with (aq) beside them) into their ions
    • indicate the correct formula and charge of each ion
    • indicate the correct number of each ion
    • write (aq) after each ion
  3. Bring down all compounds with (s), (l), or (g) unchanged

Step 1: Write the balanced chemical equation

2 NH3 (aq) + H2SO4 (aq) ---> (NH4)2SO4(aq)

Step 2: Write the complete ionic equation.

2 NH3 (aq) + 2 H+ (aq) + SO4-2 (aq)  -----------> 2 NH4+ (aq) + SO4-2 (aq)

[ Here, Strong aqueous compounds will breaks and weak aqueous , solid,liquid and gaseous compound will remain unchanged. So H2SO4 (aq) and (NH4)2SO4(aq)   wil breaks into ions but 2 NH3 (aq) is a weak aqueous compound and doen't dissolve completely ]

Step 3: Write the net ionic equation

[ net ionic equation is written  by crossing out the spectator ions from the complete ionic equation ]

You can recognize spectator ions by looking for ions that are present on both sides of the equation. They will always have the same exact formula, charge, and physical state.

2 NH3 (aq) + 2 H+ (aq) + SO4-2 (aq)  -----------> 2 NH4+ (aq) + SO4-2 (aq)

Final net ionic equation

2 NH3 (aq) + 2 H+ (aq)  -----------> 2 NH4+ (aq)

since 2 is common for all the compound so tthe final net ionic equation will be written in reduced form will be

NH3 (aq) + H+ (aq)  ----------->  NH4+ (aq)
