Case Study #1 Understanding Transactional Communication In the transactional model, two people communicate with multiple messages through what may be multiple channels and with parallel messages. Keep in mind, interference as always might causes issues. Messages can become distorted and there is a plethora of distractions that can cause misunderstandings (message failure) and that actually disrupts the model. Scenario – Work – Monday Morning – Elevator – Coworkers Bill – Good Morning, Barb Barbara – Good Morning, Bill. How are you? Bill- (Scrolling through his phone) What are you up to, today? Barbara – I have a couple meetings in the morning, but my afternoon is open. What about you? Bill – (Elevator doors open, and he steps off) – Have a great day, Barb.
Discussion The goal in transactional speaking is the exchange of messages. We collect information of value from one another in meaningful and in casual ways Assignment The actual transaction can be highly dependent on context. For example, the transactions between people at home is often quite different between those at work or on the street. Change this scenario to alter its outcome. Maybe Bill wasn’t distracted by his phone. Maybe Bill and Barbara are husband and wife at the dinner table. Change the scenario and explain why you made the changes you made.
The Monday morning at the work place seems to be in a hurry. Two coworkers Bill and Barb meet at the elevator. Bill, "Good morning, Barb. Barb reciprocates, "Good morning Bill".Bill asks, "What are you up to, today?", Barbara answers, "I have a couple of meetings in the morning., but my afternoon is open. What about you?
Bill might be having all the attention here onward to the elevators' signal/ light so that he does not miss his floor. Therefore the chance is that he fails to hear the question by Barb and steps off as soon as the elevator doors open. But after stepping off, as usual, he leaves by wishing "Have a great day Barb."
Bill's attention toward the elevator signal/ light distorts the message and he fails to receive the exact content.
Or the other reason may be that at the begining of the day Bill is trying to plan his complete day in his mind/ heart and hence he is unable to listen to Barb and misses the message.
The two changes i suggested in the end may easily happen in routine day at the work places.
